Birtenshaw College is a fully accessible and autism-friendly college for young adults with a disability, providing a motivational environment through low arousal décor and lighting, safe indoor and outdoor sensory spaces, breakout classrooms and quiet calm rooms.
Facilities at the College are tailored to ensure that young adults with a disability receive the same access to social, education and work opportunities as other young adults with every student receiving an individually tailored study programme provided in adapted classrooms using assistive technology.
The College is set in spacious grounds which provide for land-based activities, with our smallholding providing opportunity for outdoor learning through horticulture, animal care, habitat management and small-scale woodwork.
We also have the only inclusive gym in the area, providing a safe environment for students and locals to participate in exercise and fitness. With accessible equipment and calm, quiet surroundings, the gym is a safe environment which helps to promote confidence, mobility and social interaction.
Exciting new developments include our Community Café which will allow students to gain experience within a realistic working environment and our Interactive Library, which will work alongside our traditional library, but with the addition of audio books, tablets for reading as well as an interactive floor projector.
We also have our own transport to provide access for College students to our hydrotherapy facility at Birtenshaw School and a wide range of facilities within the local community.
