Sensory Garden Project

Sensory gardens have proven therapeutic benefits. The sensory garden project will incorporate the senses of touch, smell, shape and colour of the natural surroundings.

The garden will be accessible to children and young people who use wheelchairs and enable them to experience the pleasure of being out in the fresh air, smelling the flowers and helping to pick vegetables and fruit. The garden will promote the physical activity of gardening and the social interaction associated with this activity. Additionally, children will be able to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touch of plants, birds, wildlife, water features and wind-chimes.

Time spent in natural environments can provide a range of health benefits for disabled children. Most gardens offer visual appeal, but a sensory garden is designed to stimulate all five senses.
