Multi-Sensory Project

Multi-sensory equipment stimulates the primary senses and enhances the quality of life for disabled children by encouraging movement and enabling them to interact more easily with their environment.

Children with a profound and multiple learning disability often lack confidence and concentration and this can lead to feelings of frustration, isolation and exclusion. Multi-sensory equipment has a positive impact on a disabled child’s confidence and concentration span whilst encouraging the child to focus their attention on the sensory equipment. Multi-sensory creative play, for children with a learning or physical disability, can help to lay the foundation for developing the skills needed for academic, social and emotional learning and provide a firm basis for ongoing education.

The photograph illustrates a ‘sensory in a suitcase’. This multi-sensory equipment will offer disabled children an abundance of sensory stimuli: from the visual display of a space projector and coloured fibre optics, the interaction with tactile balls and colour packs, through to the calming sounds of natural music.

Estimated Cost: £2,100 per sensory suitcase
