Birtenshaw is a registered charity and children’s services organisation.
Our mission is to build a brighter future for children with special needs.
To enable us to achieve our mission we provide the following two core services: A special school and a number of specialist children’s homes and Positive Short Breaks. Both core services support children and young people with a significant physical disability or with a profound and multiple learning disability, including autistic spectrum disorder.
• Birtenshaw Children’s Homes are specialist children’s homes based mostly in ordinary family houses in the community. Our children’s homes offer children with special needs full time or shared care, which can be on a long term basis, in a homely, caring environment.
• Birtenshaw Positive Short Breaks can be provided in our main building in Bromley Cross, in a child’s own home or an activity based within the community.
• Birtenshaw School is a caring community committed to ensuring that all children are valued as individuals, treated with dignity and respect and have access to positive leaning experiences within a supportive and motivating learning environment. The school provides broad and balanced learning opportunities incorporating National Curriculum and Developmental and Sensory Curriculum adapted to the needs of each child.

Specialist health therapies such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, rebound therapy, speech and language therapy and sensory integration therapy enhance the quality of life experience for each child.
Our dedication to creating a brighter future for children with special needs is based on the notion of ‘ordinary life principles’. Children and young people with a significant physical and/or learning disability are often excluded from activities others take for granted. We believe that disabled children should have the benefit of the same learning and social opportunities as all other children.
